Louis Anthony Salamone

June 12, 1932 - February 07, 2023

Louis Anthony (Luigi Antonio) Salamone, youngest son of Michelangelo and Maria Assunta (D’Onofrio) Salamone died peacefully on February 7, 2023 at the age of 90 at his home in
La Quinta, California.  Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, brother-in-law, and friend, he is survived by his wife of 67 years Joan F. (Goldberg), and children Christi T. Salamone, Lori S. Brown (Dean), and Louis M. Salamone (Amy), as well as grandchildren Ian C. Brown (Courtney) and Alec Lowe.  Louis was preceded in death by his parents and siblings David P. Salamone, Herman C. Salamone, William C. Salamone, Mary F. DelBruegge, and Betty Vago. Louis had a fulfilling career as a proud 70-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 513, where he worked on such notable projects as the construction of the Gateway Arch and Barnes Jewish Hospital in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.  As a resident of the Italian American neighborhood ‘The Hill’ Louis treasured many life-long friends and was affectionately known in the neighborhood as “Peaches”, a nickname garnered as a child living above a greengrocer who let him pick a piece of fruit before he left for school each day.  He always picked a peach and would keep the peach seed in his mouth all day. Louis served in the Navy during the Korean conflict.  He enjoyed tending his vegetable garden, tinkering and building things in his basement workshop, bowling, and a weekly game of golf. Lou was a member who worked alongside many neighborhood tradesmen of ‘The Hill’ who donated their time to build the beautiful Italia America St. Louis Bocce Club.  Lou loved playing bocce ball and was a chosen member on one occasion to play with then sitting President Bill Clinton and US Representative Dick Gebhardt.  Lou proudly served on the board of directors of the United States Bocce Federation, played at many tournaments around the country, and he represented the U. S. team as coach and referee at two international Bocce Ball tournaments in Italy, but recounted that a most cherished memory was volunteering for the Special Olympics bocce ball matches. He was an amusing story-teller of the old days in the neighborhood and characters he met through life, and being quite a character himself, always had a witty quip or joke to tell, often cracking himself up before everyone else.  He would be content to be remembered as a humble man, happiest with a big bowl of pasta and family around the table at Sunday dinner.
