Douglas Jeffrey

February 11, 1942 - April 07, 2024

Douglas Jeffrey was born in Bakersfield, CA, on February 11, 1942. His first home was in rural Lost Hills, after which his family moved to the Belridge Oil Co. lease, where his father worked. He was joined in 1944 by a sister, Margo. While at Belridge, Doug attended high school in Taft. In 1957, the family moved to Bakersfield, where he graduated from East Bakersfield High. Doug made several attempts at college--University of California at Berkeley and Riverside--but wasn't ready for it and enlisted in the US Army in 1962. He served a three-year commitment, primarily in Pirmasens, Germany, working as a teletype operator in the Signal Corps. In 1965, he returned to California and su cessfully completed a BA Degree in English literature at Cal State Northridge. This was followed by a MS Degree in Library Science at the University of Southern California.  Doug began his career as a reference librarian in Bakersfield, working for the Kern County Library. He was briefly married in the early 70's. He eventually transitioned to the California Prison System as a librarian, first at Tehachapi in 1985, and then San Quentin in 1988. He spent the rest of his working life there, retiring during the Covid pandemic in 2020. Throughout his life, Doug was an avid reader and enjoyed writing poetry. He left an apartment filled with books. He liked to hike and bike, and was fond of hiking and camping in the Kern River Canyon. Doug is survived by his sister, of Falls Church, VA, and a niece and nephew.
