Jimmie Muñoz, Sr. born on July 27th, 1945, passed away peacefully on August 16th, 2021 surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe and Estefana Muñoz, his brothers Guadalupe (Dora) and Arturo (Josie), sister Rachel Esponoza (Richard) and his grandsons Angel and Michael, Jr. He leaves in life his wife Norma of 56 years and children: James David (Sharon), Michael Joseph (Adriana), Mario Christopher (Samantha), Georgy Ann (Michael), and Jimmie, Jr; along with 21 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sisters who he loved dearly: Mary, Margie, Esther and Becky. Born in Phoenix, Jimmie grew up in the old barrio known as Golden Gate. He married his wife in the old Sacred Heart Church near 16th Street and Buckeye, and participated in its restoration organization and loved to attend Christmas Mass there.  He attended Skiff School and Phoenix Union High School before joining the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division at age 17; he served for 6 years. Jimmie was elected to serve as the Constable of the South Phoenix Justice Court. He served proudly for about 17 years earning the respect of his community, other constables and those who worked in the Justice Court; he retired in 2017. He was a proud Democrat and served as the chair of the legislative district Democratic Party for many years. In the 1980’s Jimmie, along with his wife and others, organized the South Mountain Youth Development Association (S.M.Y.D.A.) that worked to raise pride in south Phoenix neighborhoods and create events that brought people together. He served as president for many years while planning and organizing the Cinco de Mayo and 16 de Septiembre fiestas and parades that happened in the 80’s and 90’s and were held along South Central Avenue. He made it a yearly event to enter an Airborne Float in the City’s Annual Veterans Parade, reaching out to Veterans to be part of this event and receiving many awards. Jimmie owned the Batters Cage located on South Central Avenue, where many from the community and around the area would come to hang out, hit some baseballs, play arcade and pool games, listen to the jukebox and enjoy popcorn, soda, pickles and more at the snackbar. Thirty seven years ago Jimmie started the first family owned and operated Christmas Tree Lot on South Central Avenue. This quickly became a family and south Phoenix tradition that he was so proud to operate and was looking forward to this year. He took a lot of pride in the beauty and freshness of his trees and serving the people of his community. He saw the Christmas Tree lot not only as a way for his kids and grandkids to learn about business, but also as a place for his family and community to gather and share in the season’s joy. He was a family man who put his wife and children at the center of his world.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with his family and friends. He loved music and never missed an opportunity to crank up the volume and enjoy the sounds from his vast collection which included: mariachi, doowap, funk, classic country, and so much more. Most of all, he enjoyed sitting at the bar in his home and sharing stories about the old days, talking politics, and sharing a good laugh with his compadres. He will be missed. The Viewing service will take place Monday August 30, 5-8pm at Avenidas Funeral Home, 522 E. Western Ave, Avondale, AZ 85323. The Funeral Mass will take place Tuesday, August 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, at 10 am located at 1421 S. 12th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85034. Immediately following Burial at the National Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located at 23029 N Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85024 Reception following at The Moose Lodge located at 2401 E South Mountain Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85042; 2 pm - 6 pm The family asks that you wear a mask.
