Damon Scott Evans was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 13, 1941, to his loving parents, Willie Rice, and Virginia Evans. Damon was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George L. Rice, Sr., his son-in-law Eric Avon Jackson his nephew Norman Duncan, and his grandson Ramses Thoth Hurley.
He attended Outhwaite Elementary School, Kennard Junior High School, and East Technical High School. As children, he and his sister, LaVerne, often went to get milkshakes, and smiled whenever he told stories about their ice cream trips. Damon played the drums and cymbals in the Buckeye State Band, a community band in Cleveland, Ohio, where he recognized his love for music. His favorite genre was jazz. Over the years, he built an extensive collection of jazz albums, tapes, and CDs.
His first job was in a restaurant as a cook. He drew pictures of food on the menu that the manager often displayed for others to view. He started his career with the Ajax Manufacturing Company and eventually retired after 30 years. He started working as a painter after his retirement.
His favorite past-time hobbies were cooking and drawing, and he excelled at both. He organized big feasts for family and friends, and Damon enjoyed watching everyone have a good time. He had a sense of humor and would make everyone laugh while joking around, mimicking voices, and imitating family members.
Damon was well known by many in Cleveland for his stylish suits and matching hats whenever he went out. He loved to share stories about his children and their kids, and he often bragged about their accomplishments. He mostly bragged about the most important woman in his life, his mother, Virginia Evans, who lived to be 101 years old.
He frequently drove neighbors and friends in need of transportation to the store and their appointments. He received an award plaque from the apartment complex where he resided for the service he provided to his neighbors.
In his later years, Damon was often under the watchful care of his grandson, Drew, who was his best friend. They spent memorable moments shopping, eating, and listening to music. He will be missed and remembered by his family and friends.
After a long illness, Damon departed this life on March 16, 2022. He leaves to cherish his memories, his son Damel Austin (India) daughters, LaVerne Austin and Karen Evans-Jackson. His sister, LaVerne Clouden, niece Karen Duncan, nephew Nathan Duncan (Kimberly), great-nephew Nakeen Duncan (Anna), grandchildren Andrew, Timothy, Terrell, Tierra, Lorez, Adonis, Amanda, Drew, Michelle, and Rosel, ten great-grandchildren and great-niece Kiana Duncan.
