Richard Gordon Rupp

June 04, 1939 - August 01, 2022

NAME DEATH INFORMATION

Richard Gordon Rupp of Yuma AZ passed away on August 1, 2022 from dementia and Covid-19.

BACKGROUND WORK HISTORY

Richard was born in Salem, OR on June 4, 1939 to Fred and Regina Rupp. He attended Oregon Tech College for a degree in engineering.  He worked for Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque NM, for nine years.  Richard loved learning so he attended New Mexico University and received additional bachelor’s degrees. One was in wildlife management where he spent two years in Yellowstone NP gathering data on grizzly bears.  Another was in psychology to understand himself and others.  His last job was for seven years with NRAO-Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico.

Richard lived and worked most of his life in Albuquerque NM.  After retirement he stayed in Albuquerque in summer months and went to Yuma AZ during the winter months.

OTHER INTERESTS ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Richard loved to hike, travel, build radio antennas and meet people from around the world. His favorite trip was traveling through Central America to spend time in South America touring in his faithful VW bug which he purchased new in 1960 and drove over 50 years maintaining it himself.  He and his dad were HAM radio operators (Richard-N5OBA) and he loved to take his VW up high mountains at night to talk to on his portable radio to other HAM’s from around the world.  Richard hiked the John Muir Trail with his brother Phillip in 1980.  He was big on exercise by hiking or walking at least 2 miles or more every day.

SURVIVORS

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and sister Patricia Coffee-Durant.  He leaves two loving siblings, Mary Liles (HI) and Phillip Rupp (CA).  Richard was a confirmed bachelor.

We are thankful for the loving care provided by Merrill Gardens at Gilroy and Bridge Hospice over the past year.

No services are planned per Richard’s wishes.

Dorothy Quinn Phil, the picture you posted certainly show the features of the Rupp guys. Looks more like his Dad/Fritz. I never noticed that before in Richard. I was close in age to Richard. In fact, for a while in Salem our families lived in the same house together. I recall sitting on the upstairs steps helping Richard with reading assignments. He stayed in contact with me over these many years. We both enjoyed our travels and he often called to find out which country Jim and I going to next. Always encouraged me to keep going! When he became too political, I just handed the phone to Jim. We talked a lot about medical issues and especially his grave concern for dementia. He studied the disease, trying all kinds of healthy suggestions and potions to offset the problem. I appreciated he took the time/energy to come to Family Reunions. He remembered some great stories. Remember to check him out on the reunion videos!! Dorothy

Richard Rupp Richard was a great brother but I only visited him when I passed through Albuquerque NM or Yuma AZ during winter months and he was there. He only came to see me in CA once when we planned a backpack trip of the John Muir Trail in the 1980's. My wife and I visited him in 2015 when we went to the Albuquerque Balloon Festival (wonderful event).
