Gregory Scott Kitchens

November 28, 1962 - August 17, 2022

Gregory Scott Kitchens of Oakley, CA passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 with his wife and children by his side.

Greg was born in Monterey Park, CA on November 28, 1962 to James Homer Kitchens and Judith Arlene May. He attended Arcadia High School and then served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Concepcion, Chile before graduating with an economics degree from the University of Utah and attending Texas A&M Law School. He worked as a Director of Human Resources in hospitality and healthcare.

Greg was a lifelong learner who enjoyed languages, art, sports, music and home design. On his weekends off, you could always find him washing the car, mowing the lawn, or "bagging rays" in the backyard. He took great pride in his work and received recognition and awards for his excellent performance. He always prioritized people and relationships. Whether it was by learning to greet them in their native tongue, showing up on Easter with bunny ears and candy, or playing for the company softball team, what gave him the most satisfaction in his job was recognizing and celebrating those around him. Above all, his greatest joy and life accomplishment was his family; spending time with them and supporting their endeavors.

He is survived by his wife Kay Lynn, daughter Chelsea, and son Kedric. Greg was the oldest of ten children and enjoyed a loving extended family too numerous to list.

Greg's very favorite place in the world was the beach. One of his favorite quotes was, "Happiness is the sand between my toes and the sunburn on my nose." As such, there will be a celebration of life held in his honor at the beach in Southern California sometime near his birthday in November. Further details will be forthcoming.

Paul Bontempo Dear Kay Lynn, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss and passing of your dear Greg. My memory of Greg is nothing but positive, from living near he and his family in Arcadia as a youth to sharing a Ward family later in life in Huntington. I will remember him as a kind and generous person who strived with love and kindness to care for others while making their lives better. May his memory keep you, your family and his friends ‘til we meet again. With love, The Bontempo’s

Jeffrey Barker Reneau and I are saddened to read of Greg's passing. Our condolences to you and your family. May you be blessed with many happy memories of your time together. Greg was one of the most unique people people I know. I think of him fondly. Reneau and I are grateful that he introduced us so many years ago. We are still happy forty years of marriage , five children and three grandchildren later. Greg had a great personality and loved to joke with and tease people. He always made me feel that he cared about me and what was happening in my life. Reneau and I send our best wishes and love.

Tyson Tomao The passing of Greg last week hit me hard. So it’s taken me a moment to put things in to words. I am proud to call him a friend. He had an enormous impact on my way of life. As a leader at work and in the world. I am thankful for our time in Sonoma at The Lodge and I am forever grateful for what I’ve learned from Greg. I am sad for Kay Lynn and Kedric and Chelsea, and I pray for your healing. He loved his family and was always so proud of kids! (Of course Katie and I loved our time getting to watch the pups Chip and Van.) I hope his legacy will live on with others as it will in me, I think there are three things from Greg that stand out and stick with me to this day. 1 - Lead from the bottom -Greg ALWAYS was there for all, especially those at the bottom of the accountability chart, those under appreciated, those that other leaders can tend to forget. 2 - Show Everyone the Love - He started in such a simple way, I can’t count the number of languages Greg knew how to say hello in, and how simple is that gesture to greet others in their native language to make them feel welcomed and loved 3 - Be humble - Greg never shied away from admitting he was wrong and learning from others and that allowed him to continue to grow every day. Greg, I miss you, I wish I spent more time with you, until we meet again, love you brother

Tiffany McGrew It was such an honor to get to know Greg, and learn so much from him. He was such a kind person, and always vowed to lift people up, have fun, and put a smile on your face. I will always remember your singing in the office, the awesome events/warm welcomes, and all the talks we had about family, life, work, songs, movies, and shows!
