Charlie died of heart failure in Portland, OR, on December 9, 2024, with loved ones at hand. Born in Chicago to Jane Babcock True and Charles Henderson True, Jr., Charlie grew up in Kenilworth, Illinois. He attended New Trier Township High School, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and after moving to Eugene, OR, in 1971, he received Master’s degrees in Art Education and in Graphic Arts from the University of Oregon. A professional photographer, Charlie brought a keen eye to his studio work and inventive and affectionate insights to images of the natural world. As a craftsman, he took pleasure in the hard work of creating beautiful living spaces, making homes in Eugene, Silverton, Lincoln Beach and Portland over five decades. Nothing brought smiles to Charlie’s face more than members of his family. He is survived by his children Max Henderson True and Samantha Jane True, his grandchildren Eva True and Sophia True, Donna True (Silverton, OR), his companion Dorothy Larco (Portland, OR), and his three siblings Mariette True McBurney (Minneapolis, MN), John True {Northfield, IL) and Rusty True Browder (Brookline, MA). He was beloved by his family and an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is remembered for his kindness of heart, gentle wit, and creative generosity.
