Colleen Porter

September 25, 1942 - March 10, 2026

Colleen Janis Porter (1942-2026)

Colleen Janis Porter, 83, of San Rafael, CA, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 10, 2026.

Colleen was born on September 25, 1942 to Fred and Alta Reid. Colleen and her younger sister Marla initially grew up in the Portland, Oregon area, and later relocated to California.  Colleen was a skilled equestrian and the love for her horses was deep and everlasting. She went on to study Animal Science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where through the love of horses she met her husband Richard Porter.

Colleen & Richard moved to Elgin, OR, in 1970 where they bought a cattle ranch and raised their children, Tammy and Todd. In that little valley nestled in the Blue Mountains, Colleen found great joy in raising her kids and sharing love and friendship with her neighbors through the enjoyment of music. She also loved to square dance and find treasures at garage sales.

In 1994 after her mother’s passing, Colleen moved to San Rafael where she began a new life. She connected to souls through the Unity Church, loved her Chocolate Breakfast Club pals, and could often be found dancing and supporting local musicians as they played her favorite songs. She even learned a bit of sign language so she could share the love even further.

Colleen’s passions included Native American culture, animals (particularly horses, dogs, frogs, and butterflies), dark chocolate, reading, and music. She would share these interests with nearly everyone that she came across.

Some of her favorite times were the ones spent with her children, Tammy & Todd, and their families. She had an amazing memory and could recall even the slightest details of visits and trips with Tammy and her husband Noel with their sons Jordan & Tyler or those with Todd and his wife Diane.

Colleen is survived by her children Tammy (Noel) and Todd (Diane), and grandchildren Jordan (Courtney) and Tyler. She had a beautiful life surrounded by love and kindness.

As she would wish to everyone, “Peace and walk in beauty”.

A Celebration of Colleen’s life will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at Unity in Marin, 600 Palm Dr., Novato. Visitation will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and the memorial service will follow from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
